Maps

All maps are six-coloured orienteering maps on the scale of 1:10 000, contour interval is 5 m. Maps were printed in June 2005 on waterproof material. Sizes are between A5 – A3.
Competitors may keep their maps after finishing their course. Showing one’s map to the other competitors preparing for their courses is strictly forbidden.
Older maps of the Fin5 competition area will be displayed in the competition centre until the first start on the stage.

Start numbers

Competitors use the same start number throughout the week. The number will be shown on the start list. The competitor will take his number and four (4) safety pins from a rack situated by the information pole in the competition centre. On the start number there is printed the number of his start and the sponsor’s logo along with the starting number. The number is not to be folded. When obtaining a new number to replace a lost or a torn number, the cost is 3 € and is paid at the Info-desk.
No start numbers are used in recreational classes.
Starts have special colours and are named according to the sponsors:
Start 1, FinnSpring:
Start 2, Lännen Puhelin
Start 3, Teollisuuden Voima
Start 4, Pohjola
Start 5, Kariniemi
Start 6, UPM

In chase starts extra numbers (1 – 10) will be used for the top ten. They are given out on Friday’s starts and fastened below the regular start numbers.

Emit-cards

The Electronic Emit punching system is used in all classes. The competitor has to make sure that he has a functioning Emit-card and that his card number corresponds with the number on the start list. Changes in the Emit-card numbers have to be made at the Info-desk at the Event Centre or at the competition centre. A fee of 2 € is charged. Corrections of mistakes made by the organizer are not charged.
Rented cards can be picked up in advance (on Friday or Saturday) at the Info-desk in the Fin5 Event Centre, or on competition days at the Info-desk in the competition centre.
The cards rented for one day must be returned right after the course at the Info-desk in the competition centre. The cards rented for the whole week must be returned at the finish of the 5th stage.
The rent is 10 € per week or 3 € per day. 50 € will be charged for a lost Emit-card.
The Emit-card can be tested at the model control by the information pole. When punching, the blinking light indicates that the card functions. Emit-cards will be checked at the start.

There are different instructions for the renting of EMIT-cards for the recreational classes.

Control descriptions

Control descriptions will be available in racks at the starts. Neither means to attach them nor plastic covers will be available. The descriptions are not printed on waterproof material.

Routes to the starts

The competitor uses the start with the same number throughout the week. Marked routes to the starts begin at the information pole. The colors of the markings and signs (the sponsors´ logos) of the starts will be indicated on the information pole.

Starts 1 – 4

In the waiting area before start the competitor will take his backup label for the Emit-card, write his number there and attach it to the Emit-card. The backup label will be removed at the finish. The start works as follows:
5 minutes before the start:
Competitor is called to the start. Start number is checked.
4 minutes before the start
3 minutes before the start:
Emit-card is activated and its number is checked.
2 minutes before the start:
Map of the terrain without course markings can be seen.
1 minute before the start:
Competitor steps to the map box of his class.
Start time:
Competitor takes the map and starts orienteering.

Chase-start

On Friday, July 15th, there is a chase-race in categories that use starts 1 – 4. The starting order will be determined by the total time in the first four stages. The leading competitors of each category will start according to the table “Starts, distances to the starts, classes, course lengths”.
In every class there is chase racing for 60 minutes after the first runner. The competitors more than 60 minutes behind the leader will start at 1 minute intervals. At the pre-start, five minutes before the start, every competitor receives a sticker, which announces the start time. The sticker has to be attached to the start number.
Start times of the competitors will be announced on Friday evening in the Event Centre, on the web site www.hiisirasti.fi/fin5 and Saturday morning on the bulletin board in the competition centre.

Start 5, youth classes

At the start there are control descriptions and backup labels for the Emit-cards. The start works as follows:
5 minutes before the start:
Competitor is called to the closed pre-start area. The maps of H/D9RR, H/D10RR and H/D12TR classes can be seen with courses drawn on them. Maps are fastened horizontally and oriented according to the terrain. Guides help and encourage children to study the maps. On the map of H/D12 – 14 classes, only the start is marked with a triangle.
4 minutes before the start:
Start number and time are checked.
3 minutes before the start:
Emit-card is activated and its number is checked.
2 minutes before the start:
Competitors in RR-category get the map. The guide is helping.
1 minute before the start:
Competitors in other categories get the map.
Start time:
Competitor starts orienteering.

In classes H/D9RR and H/D10RR routes will be separate in the beginning, but they will combine and be same in the end. The routes are marked with a continuous yellow string on the ground and with tape of another color hanging from trees. The colors can be seen at the start. Both routes are printed on the map.
If an orienteer in an RR-class has not correctly punched all the controls, he will not be disqualified, but an extra 10 minutes per missing punch will be added to the final time.
In H/D12TR classes both RR-routes are printed on the maps. Those can be helpful in orienteering. Controls have normal number codes, which are printed in control descriptions. Remember to take the descriptions and Emit backup labels at the start.
In H/D12 – 14 classes controls have normal number codes, which are printed in control descriptions. Remember to take the descriptions and Emit backup labels at the start.

Late arrivals

A competitor, who arrives late to the start, must report himself to the start official, who checks his right to start. An official accompanies a late starter. He goes through the same procedure as competitors starting at the normal time.

Controls and punching

The model control is located near the information pole in the competition centre. The model control of RR-classes is located at start 5.
Over the terrain there are controls close to each other and in similar-looking places. Therefore, it is very important to check the control code before punching. Controls have to be visited in the prescribed order. Punching a wrong control can be corrected by repunching the correct control.

Finish

There are six finish corridors in the competition. In all the stages each competitor will use the finish that has the same number as the start and his competitor number. (e.g., Competitor starting from start 1 runs into finish 1).
The competitor runs to his own finish corridor and punches at the finish line. The punching at the finish line is obligatory in all races except the chase-race. After punching he walks ahead and sets his Emit-card to a reading unit. The result will be accepted immediately or mistrusted. The competitor with a mistrusted result will be guided to a briefing, where the backup label of the Emit-card will be studied. The result will be accepted or disqualified in this briefing.
In chase-race the order of finishing competitors is determined by the official at the finish. The punching at the finish should be done in the same order, as the competitors cross the finish line.
The finish will be closed on Sunday at 18.00 and on the other days at 16.00.

Participants who drop out

Competitors who drop out should run to the finish normally and inform the official when setting the Emit-card to the reading unit.

Prohibited and dangerous areas

Prohibited areas are marked on the maps and on the terrain. To enter the prohibited areas is strictly forbidden, with the risk of disqualification. There will be controllers on the terrain.

Drinking water

There is drinking water available on the terrain. Places are marked on the maps. If water is available by a control, it is marked in the control descriptions.

First-aid

A first-aid station is located in the competition centre, as is an ambulance. Places where first aid is available on the terrain are marked on the maps. Also, the officials in drinking spots or at lap-time control spots send message about the need for first aid.
